If Île du Levant conjures for you midnight frangipani and tropical citrus, sea-salty skin and tan lines, you’re not alone. We’ve imagined it as an unravelling garland discarded in a passionate embrace off a beach in Tahiti.
In fact, it’s a reworking of a cotton used for a bed cover in mid-1700s Europe, and its inspiration is much closer to home: Turkey. Ottoman motifs, like lotus palmettes and saz leaves, are primitively reinterpreted in the original block printing, to which we’ve added our own sprinkling of leaves and berries.
Theyʼre just the right botanicals for an afternoon G&T, we think. Sip it and ponder the strong verticality of the repeat; perfect for curtains, nʼest-ce pas?
