Artist: Alexander Jacob (1731–1785), publisher
Technique: Copperplate engraving with watercolour
Date: 1766
Dimensions: 550 × 472 mm (framed)
This is an original copperplate engraving, not a digitally printed copy.
A finely engraved and hand-painted copperplate print on handmade paper, this is an ornamental coat of arms of the Bertie family, among them the Earls of Abingdon. Such heraldic prints, included in genealogical publications from the 18th and 19th centuries, are not uncommon, but this one is rarer than many, coming from the first volume of Alexander Jacob’s three-volume work, A Complete English Peerage, published on a subscription basis between 1766 and 1769.
The drawing style is a lovely snapshot of late 18th century taste, with not a little of the Rococo about it.
The Bertie family motto is given as Virtus Ariete Fortior – valour is stronger than a battering ram.

Note on the frame: Unlike most of our other pictures, this is in its original frame. It looks like burr walnut veneer over hardwood, embellished with a gilt inner moulding, and finished with shellac. The French matting also includes gold. Replacing all of it didn’t seem right given the style and quality. The frame isn’t all that old. The condition is good, but it does show the kind of mild wear typical of a vintage item. It may not suit some interiors, but if you’re looking for something clubby, bibliothecal, or outright manorial, this is for you!
